For 1st-3rd graders, graphic novels or simple chapter books work best - esepcially ones that have a movie component as it allows us to discuss the differences between the book and the movie (and also gives us an opportunity for a movie day!)
With 4th-6th graders, I've explored lots of different kinds of books. We've done historical fiction, mystery, classics like "A Wrinkle In Time," realistic fiction that reflects their normal lives...I find that kids in this age group are so flexible and interested in all sorts of literature. So we play around with all sorts of books in this group.
